I’ve been having physio on my hip for the past 6 weeks (I have hip bursitis).  My physio noticed that I walk a bit funny and so made me self refer to a podiatrist.

Now bear in mind I’ve been having joint problems since I was 15.  I am now 28.  I have had MRI scans, isotope scans, x rays and so many blood tests I’ve lost count. I have even given up a cross country running career beacuse if it.  Nobody has ever given me an answer.

Until now!

Five minutes into my consultation the woman points out something very obvious and she is shocked that nobody has spotted this before.

My left leg is nearly 2 inches shorter than my right leg.

All of these years my right side has been turning inwards to compensate for this and so this is what is causing all of the joint and muscle aches I get down the right side of my body.

I now have an orthotic heel raise in my left shoe to level me out and one in my right to stop me turning inwards.  I have to wear these in flat shoes for 6 weeks to see if it helps.

Can’t believe it’s taken this long to spot.

My mum got me a tagine for christmas so I decided I should actually use it.  I don’t have any recipes so I just bunged whatever I had laying around in it hoping something good would come out.  The result was actually quite yummy so here’s my recipe (complete with compromises)

Kat’s Chicken Tagine

2 Tablespoons olive oil
Knob butter
1 onion finely chopped
2 cloves garlic finely chopped
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoon cumin seeds (ground or not doesn’t matter)
1 teaspoon grated ginger (use ground if you don’t have fresh)
½ teaspoon turmeric
½ teaspoon ground coriander
1 chili (I used chili paste as I didn’t have a chili)
1 tablespoon of red pepper paste (You can use tomato paste if you are normal and like tomatoes, I am not)
4 chicken thighs (nice and cheap)
1 tablespoon runny honey
150g dried apricots, halved
A couple of carrots chopped however you like
A red pepper
Couscous and fresh coriander to serve

Heat the oil and butter in your tagine or casserole dish and add the onions and garlic until soft.

Add in the spices and paste and then cook for a minute or two.

Add the chicken thighs and enough water to cover the bottom of the pan.

Add the apricots and pour the honey over the chicken.

Cook for 40 minutes on a low simmer

Add the carrots and peppers and cook for another 10 minutes.  In the meantime you can prepare your couscous and chop your coriander.
